Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has confirmed that a global outage caused by an automatic software update from CrowdStrike has impacted some state government systems and employee devices. The Iowa Department of Management’s Division of Information Technology quickly identified and addressed the issue, with a temporary fix applied within minutes. Approximately 1,400 servers and 3,300 workstations were initially affected, but quick action limited the impact to less than 20 percent of all devices across executive branch departments.
IT staff for the State of Iowa are currently working around the clock to restore all systems and devices, with full restoration expected over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Department of Revenue, and Department of Human Services have also been experiencing technical issues due to global vendor technology problems. These agencies are working to resolve the issues as soon as possible and have provided updates on the impacted systems.
The outage highlights the vulnerability of relying on third-party vendors for critical software updates and the importance of having robust IT security measures in place. As the affected agencies work towards restoring their systems, it serves as a reminder of the potential disruptions that can occur in today’s highly connected digital environment.
