A global Microsoft outage affected various services and companies around the world, including in the Chicago area. The disruption impacted Microsoft 365 apps and services, with outages recorded in several airlines, banks, and media outlets such as Delta, American Airlines, NAB, and the ABC.
The outage led to grounded flights and delays at airports, affecting United, American, and Delta Airlines. Illinois State Police also reported technical issues. Internationally, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Europe faced similar disruptions, with airlines, railways, and news outlets being affected.
Passengers faced long lines and delays at airports, such as in Melbourne and Schiphol, while airports like Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci and Berlin experienced check-in delays and flight suspensions. News anchors in Australia resorted to broadcasting online due to system outages, and shoppers were unable to make payments at supermarkets. Banks like ASB and Kiwibank in New Zealand also experienced service disruptions.
Crowdstrike, at the center of the outage, confirmed a defect in a Windows update caused the issue, which was not a cyberattack. Microsoft worked to resolve the problem, with services gradually recovering after the company’s deployment of a fix. Airlines like Delta and American Airlines issued statements, apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the outage and explaining the impact on flight operations.
