An additional ten Democrats urge Biden to drop out of the 2024 election race

Ten Democratic members of Congress have joined calls for President Joe Biden to step aside as the party’s nominee, bringing the total number of Democrats seeking a change at the top of the ticket to over 30. Some of the new defectors include Senator Martin Heinrich, who is seeking re-election, and several House Democrats from Biden’s core support groups like the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Congressional Progressive Caucus. The group believes that Biden should pass the torch to a younger leader like Vice President Kamala Harris to reinvigorate the campaign and boost Democratic momentum. Other lawmakers, like Rep. Sean Casten and Rep. Greg Landsman, have also urged Biden to step aside, citing concerns about his ability to win and shift the conversation away from his age and fitness. Despite these calls, Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to staying in the race and has the backing of millions of primary voters. Campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon acknowledged the challenging weeks following the debate performance but remains optimistic about Biden’s chances to defeat Trump and plans for him to return to the campaign trail once he recovers from Covid. Calls for his withdrawal come amidst concerns about his age, fitness, and electability in the upcoming election in 2024.
