A group of 75 wealthy Democratic political donors held a Zoom call to discuss President Joe Biden’s future following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Most donors felt Biden should drop out of the race to defeat Trump in November. They have since launched a lobbying campaign to convince lawmakers to publicly call on Biden to end his campaign. Big donors, including Hollywood executive Ari Emanuel and the Clintons, have urged donors to stick with Biden. Despite pressure, Biden insists he will not drop out, with over 20 members of Congress calling on him to pass the torch. Pelosi, Schumer, and Jeffries have warned Biden about the concerns of down-ballot candidates if he continues. Biden’s fundraising has seen a collapse, but events featuring Vice President Kamala Harris, his potential successor, have started to sell out. An event with Harris in Pittsfield, Mass. is nearly sold out with tickets ranging from $100 to over $12,000 featuring James Taylor and Yo-Yo Ma as headliners. Despite donors’ concerns and fundraising challenges, events with Harris suggest some support for a potential Biden exit and Harris taking over as the Democratic nominee.
