Crossing the Finish Line at the Starting Line

After 11 years in the world of journalism, Chief Political Correspondent Ty Rushing is bidding farewell to Iowa Starting Line. Rushing reflects on his time with Starting Line, highlighting some of the quirky and messy stories he covered, including the disastrous 2021 Des Moines Taco Festival and local government dramas. Despite the challenging aspects of covering the Iowa Legislature, Rushing found moments of joy in reporting alongside dedicated colleagues and building relationships with activists and lawmakers. He also expresses gratitude for the support of his Starting Line colleagues and the broader journalism community.

Looking ahead, Rushing will be joining the University of Iowa as an assistant professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He sees this as an opportunity to teach the next generation of journalists and instill the value of community journalism. While some may be surprised by his decision to stay in Iowa, Rushing reflects on the positive experiences and memories he has had in the state and looks forward to continuing his journalistic journey there.

Rushing invites readers to stay connected through social media and his upcoming Substack newsletter, as well as potential future collaborations with Iowa Starting Line. As he embarks on this new chapter, Rushing remains grateful for the opportunities and experiences that Iowa has provided him throughout his career.
