Former Hawkeye standout and current WNBA player, Kate Martin, suffered an injury to her lower right leg during a game on Tuesday. The injury, described as a bruised Achilles tendon by her father, occurred early in the first quarter and led to Martin being unable to return to the game. Despite her absence, she returned to the bench to support her teammates as they ultimately lost to the Chicago Sky.
Martin, who is in her rookie year with the Las Vegas Aces, has been averaging 3.4 points per game off the bench and has been an important player for the team. Her injury comes at a “perfect timing” according to her father, as the WNBA has a month-long break for the Paris Olympics. It remains unclear if Martin will miss any future games due to the injury.
With the All-Star break coinciding with the Olympics, the Aces have a month before their next game, giving Martin time to recover and potentially return to action on August 17th against the New York Liberty. As a former star for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Martin has had a successful career and will be looking to continue making an impact in the WNBA once she recovers from her injury.
