Continued Extreme Heatwave Grips West and East Coasts, Bringing Sweltering Temperatures

This weekend, an “extremely dangerous heat” wave is impacting both the West and East coasts of the United States, with around 115 million people experiencing sweltering conditions in cities such as Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and Washington D.C. The National Weather Service issued warnings about potentially deadly heat, with temperatures in the high 90s to 110s especially in the West. Record-breaking temperatures have already been reported in Palm Springs, California, and potential record highs are expected in various cities throughout the weekend.

Excessive heat watches, warnings, and advisories have been issued for much of the West, with Oregon declaring an extreme heat emergency due to the high temperatures forecasted through Tuesday. On the East Coast, temperatures are expected to be five to 10 degrees above average, with heat index values making it feel even hotter. Heat advisories have been issued from New York to Charleston, with cities like Newark providing cooling centers for residents to escape the heat.

The intense heat combined with dry and windy conditions also create a critical fire risk in parts of the West, such as southern Idaho and Utah. It is important for residents to take precautions, especially for vulnerable populations like children, elderly individuals, and those working outdoors. The heatwave is expected to persist throughout the weekend and into next week, with some relief forecasted in certain areas by Sunday.
