U.S. prosecutors are seeking a guilty plea from Boeing over a charge related to two fatal crashes of 737 Max planes. Attorneys for the victims’ families have criticized the potential agreement as a “sweetheart deal.” The Justice Department is discussing the plan with victims’ family members and their attorneys. Boeing has not commented on the matter, and it is unclear if they will accept the plea deal, which could impact their ability to secure government contracts. The DOJ is reviewing whether Boeing violated a previous settlement from 2021 after a new safety crisis with a 737 Max 9 airplane in January. The plea deal would require Boeing to pay an additional fine of $247 million and have an outside monitor installed. The agreement stems from Boeing admitting in 2021 that it defrauded the FAA by concealing a new flight-control system implicated in the crashes. Attorneys for the victims’ families believe the plea deal is inadequate and only amounts to a “slap on the wrist.”
